Indian Oven, the Indian restaurant at 427 E. Main St. that served Powell diners for more than two decades, has closed and plans to reopen in Delaware.

Owner Murad Hossain's restaurant posted a farewell on social media, calling the final day bittersweet and promising the same flavors at a future Delaware, Ohio, location. The post said the closure was not the end of the restaurant's journey and that diners could expect a welcome again soon. No address or opening date for the new location has been announced.

The closure, reported Sept. 3 by 614Now Magazine, marks the second restaurant to leave downtown Powell in a week. Nocterra Brewing permanently closed its Powell taproom Monday, Aug. 31, as we reported Sept. 1. Columbus Business First also reported on Indian Oven's closure Sept. 2.

Indian Oven first opened at 2346 N. High St. in Old North Columbus. The restaurant shared a co-winner nod for Best Indian Restaurant from Columbus Alive magazine in 2000, according to the Love Letter to Columbus blog. It relocated to East Main Street in Powell in 2001, according to 614Now.

The two closures come against a backdrop of broader growth. A city report shared with Powell City Council in July counted 357 total economic development projects, a nearly 46% increase from June 2025. That tally included 32 new businesses or startups representing 193 full-time-equivalent jobs and roughly $19.1 million in capital investment.

Residents have signaled they want more dining options downtown. A Village Green Master Plan community survey rated the desire for additional food and beverage options in the downtown area at 7.5 out of 10. The same survey rated local businesses and small stores as important indicators of Powell's success at 7.9 out of 10.

Indian Oven has not announced a timeline for its Delaware opening. The restaurant directed followers to watch its social media pages for updates.
