David and Mary's, a Lewis Center market stocking about 90% Ohio-grown products, is running out of shelf space less than a year after opening.

Co-owner Ellen Fishel told Delaware Source the store at 6001 Columbus Pike had its busiest stretch during summer 2026. She attributed the surge in part to a cyclosporiasis outbreak and multiple FDA food recalls that made shoppers seek food they can trace to its source.

Ohio reported more than 5,800 cyclosporiasis cases in summer 2026, the second-highest total in the nation, according to NBC News citing the Ohio Department of Health. Nationally, the FDA oversaw recalls of eggs, lettuce and jalapeño peppers tied to salmonella and cyclospora outbreaks, Newsweek reported.

Fishel said the store's direct relationships with Ohio farmers let her and her husband, Jeff Fishel, vet every product they carry. They ask suppliers about growing practices, animal living conditions, pesticide use and whether food contains dyes. David and Mary's carries about 130 local products and works with just three distributors. Everything else comes from a direct supplier relationship.

"… In the past three months, we've had a huge increase in people wanting to buy local produce," Fishel said.

Jeff Fishel is chief of Delaware County EMS. Ellen Fishel works full time as a human resources consultant. The couple has six children, the youngest nearly 2. The market's name comes from their middle names: David and Mary.

The Fishels originally planned to open in Delaware but pivoted to the U.S. 23 corridor after that deal fell through. The Lewis Center spot gave the business strong visibility, Ellen Fishel said.

Demand has strained the space. In less than a year the Fishels added multiple freezers, refrigerators and shelving units beyond their original setup. Shelves restock on Tuesdays. By Wednesdays, some are bare.

Ellen Fishel said she hopes the store will outgrow its current footprint and expand to a new location with room for prepared food and Ohio beer and wine. No timeline or site has been announced.

Word of mouth drives much of the store's traffic. The Fishels also attended area markets during the summer and hosted farmers in their parking lot. A Sticky Fingers Ice Cream Parlor food truck served customers there as well.

In winter, the store eases its Ohio-only rule and allows American-sourced products to keep shelves stocked.
