Drivers on Rutherford and Steitz Roads in Liberty Township now face a new three-way stop at the intersection, a change recommended by the office of Delaware County Engineer Chris Bauserman.
No reason was given.
Liberty Township announced the installation on Aug. 6. Flashing warning signs have been placed ahead of the new stop signs to alert motorists unfamiliar with the change.
The township's notice did not specify whether a traffic study, crash history or increased volume from nearby development prompted the recommendation.
Steitz Road widening wraps up
The stop sign arrives as a separate, larger project on Steitz Road wraps up. The Delaware County Engineer's Office has been widening Steitz Road between Harvest Point Drive and Hyatts Road since July 2025, a project originally scheduled to finish by June 2026. East-side paving is complete and drainage work is being finalized, according to the Engineer's Office.
The widening project required an Ohio EPA stormwater permit covering 4.53 acres of land disturbance, issued in February 2025.
Steitz Road serves the Delaware County District Library's Liberty Branch and connects residential neighborhoods to the broader road network. The new stop at Rutherford adds a traffic-calming measure to a road that has seen construction from the widening project over the past year.
No timeline has been announced for removing the flashing warning signs.
