Olentangy Local School District's fifth high school has a name: Olentangy Hyatts High School.

The Board of Education chose the name at its Thursday, Oct. 8 meeting after reviewing 729 suggestions submitted by students, families, staff and community members throughout September, the district announced. The board considered community feedback, staff recommendations, student input and historical research before making its pick.

The name draws from Hyatts, a historic community in the Liberty Township and Delaware County area documented in the Powell Liberty Historical Society archives.

Under Board Policy 7250, school names must reflect local history, geography or significant community connections. Directional names like north or south are not allowed.

The school will sit at the northwest corner of Bunty Station and Sawmill Parkway in Delaware Township. Construction is already underway on the roughly 300,000-square-foot building, which Fox 28 Columbus reported will include an 800-seat auditorium, a media center, a cafe, five practice fields and two fields for baseball and softball. The project is expected to cost more than $145 million.

Voters approved the bond issue in November 2025 to fund the high school, a new elementary school and other facility upgrades. The measure passed with 56.21% of the vote (13,915 to 10,841), according to Ballotpedia.

The district expects to add about 2,000 students by the time Olentangy Hyatts opens for the 2028-29 school year. More than 24,500 students started the current school year across the district's four existing high schools, six middle schools and elementary campuses, 1808 Delaware reported.

"Our school buildings ultimately belong to our community, and we want the greater community to feel ownership over the schools," Assistant Director of Communications Amanda Beeman told the Delaware Source in September, when the district opened the naming survey.

Next up: school colors and a mascot. The district also plans to hire a principal in the spring.

Attendance boundaries that will determine which students attend Olentangy Hyatts are expected to be announced at the Dec. 10 Board of Education meeting. Four community forums on redistricting options are scheduled before then: Monday, Oct. 26 at Olentangy Liberty High School, Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Olentangy Berlin High School, Monday, Nov. 2 at Olentangy High School and Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Olentangy Orange High School. All begin at 6:30 p.m.
