Two Olentangy Liberty High School a cappella groups stepped onto the field at Huntington Park on Sept. 1 and sang the national anthem before a Columbus Clippers game.

Sounds of Liberty, the school's mixed-voice ensemble, and Liberty Belles, the all-female group, performed together before the Clippers' 7-6 comeback win over the Iowa Cubs, the Patriot Press reported. It was at least the second year the Liberty Township students have been invited to sing at a Clippers game.

The performers arrived at the home plate gate at 5:45 p.m. Choir director Alyssa Ahlborn handed out tickets and later gave the group its starting pitch on the field. A large camera tracked across the singers during the performance, projecting them onto the stadium's big screen.

The crowd cheered when they finished.

Before the anthem, the students lined up just outside the foul line near home plate. Krash, the Clippers' parrot mascot, walked down the line giving high fives.

Student Siya Teni told the Patriot Press the group had learned a new arrangement this year. "The arrangement was different from the one we sang last year, but it was incredibly rewarding to perform the finished song with everyone at the game," Teni said.

Rehearsals began a few weeks before the Sept. 1 performance. Students first learned their individual parts from an audio track before coming together as a full group.

Fellow performer Charlotte Barth said she wasn't that nervous, crediting weeks of practice. Connor Straus described the crowd growing louder as the Clippers rallied, calling the atmosphere "electric" late in the game. The Clippers trailed 6-4 entering the eighth inning before scoring three runs to take the lead for good.

The Tuesday night game also happened to be dime-a-dog night. Student Eli Schumm took full advantage, telling the Patriot Press he tried mayonnaise on a hot dog at someone's suggestion and that it "changed my life."

Olentangy Schools congratulated the Sounds of Liberty on its official Facebook page.
