A group of Olentangy Orange High School seniors are building prosthetic hands and giving them away for free.
The students founded Hands Across Borders in November 2025, using 3D printers to design and deliver custom prosthetic hands to people with limb differences below the wrist. The organization charges recipients nothing, according to its website.
Fox 28 Columbus reported on the group Saturday, Sept. 19, describing five seniors behind the effort.
Ravindra Sunkara, the group's founder and managing director, leads a team that includes Parthiv Bhonagiri, who handles internal operations, and Vincent Pham, the lead manufacturer. Pranav Mehta manages outreach, and Sivansh Bisoyi works on manufacturing and design. The organization's website also lists Jerry Guo as treasurer and Aiden Zhao on social media.
The team uses open-source designs from e-NABLE, a global volunteer network that 3D-prints prosthetic hands and arms. e-NABLE has delivered free devices to an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 recipients worldwide, according to the network's website. Hands Across Borders prints its devices using medical-grade PLA and heat-resistant PETG filaments on fused deposition modeling printers.
Two models are available. The Unlimbited Phoenix Hand is a compact design capable of lifting more than 35 pounds of force. The Unlimbited Arm v2.1 is a body-powered forearm with an articulated hand and adjustable upper-arm support. Recipients can choose any color or design combination.
A basic prosthetic limb runs $5,000 to $10,000, according to a cost breakdown from Orthotics Limited, a prosthetics provider. A myoelectric prosthetic arm can reach $20,000 to $50,000. Hands Across Borders provides its devices at no charge.
The organization states on its website that it works with partner organizations in more than 12 countries. Delivery typically takes two to four weeks from first contact, depending on location and customization.
Sunkara has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover printing and material costs. People who need a prosthetic hand or want to volunteer can reach the team at [email protected] or submit a request through the intake form at hands-across-borders.org.
