Powell police officers handled 1,479 calls for service in August, down from 1,697 in July. The figures come from the department's monthly report presented to Powell City Council at its Tuesday meeting.

Of those calls, 394 were dispatched. Officers filed 82 police reports, made four arrests (two adults and two juveniles) and conducted 106 traffic stops. The department recorded 19 traffic crashes and issued 35 traffic citations tied to crashes.

Officers responded to 38 false alarms, completed 40 house watches and logged 61 preventive patrols. Five "stacked calls," situations where calls wait for an available officer, occurred during the month.

The department reported no uses of force. Five calls were referred to the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), which responds when officers encounter people experiencing mental health or behavioral crises.

Training hours jumped to 170.5 in August, up from 63 in July. Topics included use-of-force decision-making, effective report writing, officer wellness, domestic violence response and compliance-and-control tactics. The department logged 2,264 training hours across all of 2025, according to its annual report.

Officers participated in several community events during August. The department joined National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Officer Bob Brown represented the department at First Friday in Delaware on Friday, Aug. 7, and Officer Elliott brought a cruiser to Montessori Kids Universe on Saturday, Aug. 8 for a display.

On Aug. 20 and 21, officers visited Tyler Run Elementary School to distribute e-bike safety information. The school visits grew out of planning Chief Ron Sallows described at the Operations Committee's June 16 meeting, where he said the department had been working on e-bike education for about two years.

"They are in the process of starting a community safety and education initiative and working with the local business community," Sallows said at that June meeting, adding the effort would focus on "high visibility patrols around schools, neighborhoods, multi-use paths and then enforcement priorities."

Officers also handed out Johnson's Ice Cream coupons to children spotted wearing bicycle helmets during August. The department installed six child car seats during the month.

Residents can contact the Powell Police Department at 614-885-5005 to report non-emergency safety concerns or request a car seat installation.
